About 140 years have passed since the founders of the Gum Springs Schoolhouse and the Prairie View Cemetery came to these parts, and reminders of their presence still exists today. Although the church and school are gone, the land that hosted these early pioneers still exists with fertile soil and underground water, a settler’s best combination. Sitting near the cemetery, this property is now set up for the modern rancher. Cross-fenced, earthen tanks, water troughs throughout along a series of waterlines originating from the the two water wells, and a set of working pens. The livestock thrive on the grasses that grown in a mix of sandy loam and clay loam; typical of a property sitting on the edge of the shinnery. It’s in that sandy loam that you’ll find multiple pockets of wild plum thickets. Although the plums didn’t make this year, it is easy to envision the pasture full of deep purple just before July 4th. Not only are those plums great in preserves, they attract the wildlife. Whitetail deer, feral hogs, Rio Grande Turkeys, varmints, and more will be drawn in to the multiple clusters of plums; the cowboys that ride the property view an abundance of wildlife daily.
